Full Description & Details

Mljake is a paid mooring buoy field located in the Zapuntel Strait (Durchfahrt Zapuntel) on the eastern side of Insel Ist in the Zadar Archipelago. The facility consists of 8 mooring buoys positioned directly across from the port of Zapuntel on Molat Island. This location provides an alternative to the often-crowded port of Ist during the summer season.

The strait between Ist and Molat offers good protection from most wind directions, though strong bora winds from the northeast can create hazardous conditions with violent gusts and rip currents reaching up to 3 knots. The bora is particularly intense when weather is clear and typically lasts one to three days in summer, often subsiding within hours. Mariners should not attempt to cross the strait when bora is blowing. The surrounding area features Mediterranean scrub and remains relatively undeveloped, with limited tourist infrastructure.

The mooring field operates as a paid facility (kostenpflichtiger Ankerplatz), though specific amenities at the buoys themselves are not documented. The nearest services are available at the port of Ist, approximately one mile to the northwest, which offers basic provisions and restaurants. The strait contains numerous navigational hazards including shoals, rocks, and islets that require careful chart study.

Mariners should exercise particular caution when maneuvering due to strong currents in the passage. Anchoring is prohibited in the center of the channel. The area is best suited for those seeking tranquility and natural surroundings rather than extensive marina facilities.

How to get there

When approaching Mljake from the south, navigate through the Zapuntel Strait with extreme caution due to numerous hazards including shoals, rocks, and islets. Follow the white and red flashing light (4 seconds) when entering; approximately half a mile from the strait, keep to the right and watch for the isolated danger mark consisting of two overlapping black spheres on the left. From the north, follow the white flashing light (2 seconds).

The GPS position for approach is 44°16.046'N, 14°48.085'E. Be especially vigilant regarding strong currents in the strait, which can reach 3 knots. Do not attempt passage during strong bora conditions, which create dangerous rip currents and violent gusts from the northeast. Night approaches from southern directions are not recommended due to numerous small islands and shoals.

VHF contact is available on channel 6002. The mooring field is located directly across from Zapuntel on Molat Island, approximately one mile southeast of Ist port.
