Full Description & Details
Griparica is a sheltered inlet on the southern coast of the island of Skarda, in the Zadar archipelago of Croatia. The bay runs long and deep into the island, with the fortified house at its head now converted into holiday apartments.
It is the main anchorage on Skarda, which is a small, low-lying island with a summer population of barely 20 people. The bay is well protected from most winds, but it is exposed to the south, and a strong southerly wind brings high waves that make anchoring inadvisable.
How to get there
Approach Griparica from the south, entering the inlet on the southern coast of Skarda. The bay is open to the south, so approach with caution in southerly winds.
There are no reported hazards in the approach, but the currents between Skarda and the nearby island of Ist are changeable and strong. There is no VHF channel listed for the anchorage; contact is by phone at +385 (0) 98 219 632.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the depth range in Griparica anchorage?
The depth in Griparica ranges from 3.0 to 10.0 meters, with most of the inlet too deep for anchoring except near the shore.
Are there mooring buoys available at Griparica?
Mooring buoys were removed in 2024, and anchoring on your own anchor is now allowed. Some concrete blocks remain on the seabed for tying up, but they are mostly deep.
Is Griparica protected from all winds?
Griparica is protected from winds except from the south. A strong south wind brings high waves, making anchoring not recommended; in such conditions, sail to Trate bay on the north side of the island.
What facilities are available at Griparica?
There is a restaurant at the head of the bay that opens in July and August only. The nearest fuel station is 20 nautical miles away at Novalja. A walking path connects Griparica to Trate bay.
Is there a fee to anchor at Griparica?
Anchoring on your own anchor is free, as the mooring buoys have been removed. Previously, a concession fee applied for buoy use, but that is no longer in effect.
