Full Description & Details

Kali Harbour, also known as Luka Kali, sits on the southeastern coast of the island of Ugljan in North Dalmatia, about two miles southeast of Preko. It is a working fishing port, the oldest and largest town on the island with around 1,600 residents. The harbour consists of two basins: the old harbour in Luka Kali for small boats and a newer port in Uvala Bataloza to the southeast for larger fishing vessels.

Stone houses and narrow streets characterize the town, which dates back to around 1300. The baroque church of Sv. Lovre, built in 1698, dominates the village, and the small 14th-century church of St. Pelegrin stands on a hill above.

A fishing festival takes place in the church square in July and August during the full moon.

How to get there

Approaching Kali Harbour presents no dangers, but the harbour is exposed to northern winds, which can create challenging conditions. Look for a red column with a red light at the head of the eastern breakwater, and the belfry in the village helps pinpoint the location. The islet of Osljak, with a white light, lies to the northeast.

The nearest year-round port of entry is Zadar. There are no VHF channels listed for the harbour. The harbour is usually crammed with fishing boats, so space for yachts is limited.

If space is available, the best position is alongside the eastern breakwater in the north harbour, where depths range from 3.0 to 4.0 metres. Be prepared to move if a fishing boat needs the space. Alternatively, you may tie alongside a fishing boat if permitted.

Shelter is good except with northerly winds, when the south harbour offers better protection, though even less space. Boats with a draft up to 3.5 metres can moor on the inner end of the masonry breakwaters and within the inner harbour, where depths are around 0.52 metres. The inner harbour is primarily occupied by fishing yachts.
