The city of Risan, located in the north of the Bay of Kotor, is protected by the high limestone cliffs of Mount Orjen. It offers a small sheltered harbour.
Location
Risan is situated at the extreme north end of the western arm of the Bay of Kotor, approximately two miles north of Perast and around seven miles by sea northwest of Kotor. This small coastal town is surrounded by steep mountains, creating a stunning natural setting that attracts visitors from around the world.
Approach to the Marina
The approach to Risan Harbour is generally free from hazards, but it’s important to be cautious of shallows close inshore immediately west of the harbour. While the harbour itself is small, navigating it can be tricky in strong winds. Additionally, variations in atmospheric pressure can cause a significant rise and fall in water levels, so it’s essential to position lines and fenders accordingly to ensure a safe berth. Westerly winds make the outer part of the dam uncomfortable.
Specifications of the Marina
Risan Harbour can accommodate up to three moderate draft yachts alongside the inner, land-side quay of the harbour. The depths at the quay are 2.0 meters, while they reach 2.75 meters where your keel will be lying. It’s worth noting that there is a small ledge along the quay, but this should not pose a problem if you use suitable fenders.
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to moor along the outside of the breakwater, as this area serves as a customs quay. The bollards on the quay are widely spaced and set back about a meter, making it slightly challenging to get lines ashore. However, the shelter in the harbour is excellent in all conditions, although there can be fresh to strong overnight thermal north winds, so it’s recommended to berth with the bows facing north for a quiet night.
