Full Description & Details
Sudurad is a small harbour on the southwest coast of Sipan island in South Dalmatia, Croatia. It is a working village harbour rather than a full marina, with a quay near the ferry dock and a handful of restaurant and bar moorings. By day it can be busy with excursion boats and day trippers, but by evening it settles into a quiet village. The settlement is dominated by the Stjepovic-Skocibuha fortress, a 16th-century renaissance castle with a tall defensive tower, and a short walk leads up to a small church with views over the island and surrounding water.
Mooring is stern-to the quay using mooring lines, or on one of five restaurant (konoba) buoys northeast of the town quay. Anchoring in the harbour basin is possible but space is limited if you want to be close to town. Holding can be poor: one report describes dragging on slick rock bottom before the anchor finally held in weed. Keep clear of the ferry route to the quay, and note that ferries and over-enthusiastic fishing boats can generate light swell. The quay can be occupied by excursion boats until 16:00, and at weekends the harbour is often taken over by flotillas.
Facilities are basic. There is one small shop on the waterfront and a mini market near the quay. Restaurant Stara Mlinica serves good fresh fish at a reasonable price, and there are a few other tiny restaurants and bars. There is no fuel dock, no marina office, and no harbour master's hours are specified. A ticket stand near the harbour sells ferry tickets, and there is a bus connection from Gruz to Dubrovnik Old Town.
Approach from the east is advised, watching for low, barely visible rocks and shallows, especially off the north shore. When entering from the south, go around the shallows extending from Sekanj Point, watch for Ruda Rock on the north side of Ruda islet, and the shallows 200 m west of that rock. Keep sufficient distance from the mole because of the stone riprap. Overnight stays are permitted, but there is no marina staff to collect fees; if no one appears, you may need to sort out mooring lines yourself.
How to get there
Approach Sudurad from the east, as the harbour is approached from that direction. When entering from the south, go around the shallows that continue from Sekanj Point, watch for Ruda Rock on the north side of the Ruda islet, and the shallows 200 m west of this rock. There are few low, barely visible rocks in front of the north shore, so sailing near the south shore is advised.
Keep sufficient distance from the mole because of the stone riprap. There is no VHF channel specified for Sudurad; contact is not formalized, and there is no harbour master's office. Sudurad is on Sipan island, about 5 km from the main town of Sipanska Luka at the northern end.
The nearest airport is Dubrovnik, and the harbour is well positioned for a quick sail to and from Dubrovnik. A ferry connects Sudurad to Dubrovnik, with a ticket stand near the harbour. From the ferry dock in Dubrovnik, a bus (lines 1a, 1b, 3) runs from Gruz to the Old Town.
