Full Description & Details

Luka Polace is an anchorage on the northwest coast of the island of Mljet, at the bottom of a long inlet protected by several wooded islands and islets. The small village of Polace sits at the head of the bay, and the anchorage is one of the most sheltered in the region, offering very good protection from all winds. The bay is part of Mljet National Park, and the surrounding shore is heavily treed, adding to the sense of seclusion.

Anchoring is permitted, with depths ranging from 5 to 14 meters. The seabed is a mix of mud, sand, and seagrass, providing very good holding. The best shelter is found in the northern part of the bay, where a line can be taken ashore from the stern. A mooring fee is charged in season, and a national park entrance fee is also levied per person when anchoring or mooring.

Facilities are basic. A wharf near the castle is available for mooring, away from the ferry dock. Several restaurants on the southeast side of the bay offer their own moorings free of charge to diners. A dinghy can reach a dock, and water is available. The main anchorage is to the west of the town.

Hazards include rocky shallows near O. Skoljic and Moracnik, and a low rocky bank in the channel. The anchorage is a popular stop for those exploring Mljet National Park, with the Roman palace ruins at Polace a short distance away.

How to get there

From the east or southeast, the main entrance is between the island of Mljet and O. Kobrava. The Hrid Kula light, on a rocky islet roughly halfway between Mljet and O. Kobrava, marks the entry; pass north of it. From the north or west, the entrance channel is between Mljet and O. Moracnik, but beware of a rocky shallow extending west from O. Skoljic; pass west of O. Skoljic and stay in the middle of the fairway.

A low rocky bank extends eastward into the channel, and a rock covered by 5.5 meters lies near Moracnik. There is no VHF channel listed for this anchorage. The village of Polace is on the island of Mljet, accessible by road from other parts of the island.

The nearest airport is on the mainland, requiring a ferry connection.
