Full Description & Details

Morinjski Zaliv is a quiet bay on the western side of Boka Kotorska, in Herceg Novi Municipality, Montenegro. It is a natural harbour that suits a daytime stop for lunch and swimming. The bay sits near the village of Morinj, with the ancient town of Risan to the north and Perast and its islands nearby. Kotor Old Town, a UNESCO site, is a short distance away. The setting is sheltered and calm during the day, but conditions change after dark.

Protection at night is poor. Strong katabatic gusts flow down the mountains behind Risan and can make the anchorage unsafe. Overnight anchoring is restricted for this reason. The seabed is mud, and holding is generally good, but you should lay adequate scope if a nocturnal breeze develops. Depths range from 3 to 12 metres. A dock lies at the north end of the bay, where you can moor alongside in about 3 metres, or anchor in up to 12 metres facing the village. There are four guest buoys available, and anchoring is allowed.

Facilities are minimal. A snack bar and a beach are reachable by dinghy, and water is available at the dock. There is no VHF channel listed, but a phone number is published for the mooring field. No fuel, repair yard, or chandlery is mentioned. The bay is best treated as a day anchorage rather than a base for provisioning or maintenance.

Approach is straightforward, with no dangers reported. The main hazard is the evening katabatic wind, so plan to leave before nightfall or move to a more protected anchorage. The best season is the summer cruising period, when the bay is calm during the day. Given the overnight restriction, treat Morinjski Zaliv as a lunch stop or a short stay, and use Risan or another harbour for the night.

How to get there

Approach Morinjski Zaliv from the west side of Boka Kotorska, with no dangers reported on the way in. The bay is open and easy to identify, with the village of Morinj ahead. There is no VHF channel listed, so make contact by phone if you need to arrange a buoy or dock space.

The dock is at the north end of the bay, where you can moor in about 3 metres, or anchor in up to 12 metres facing the village. Land access is by dinghy to the dock, where water is available. The nearest town is Risan, a short distance north, and Kotor is within easy reach by road or water.

No formalities are mentioned beyond standard Montenegrin entry procedures. For a night stop, consider anchoring at Risan instead, as Morinjski Zaliv is unsafe overnight due to katabatic gusts.
