Ubli is the ferry port and year-round port of entry at the southeast end of Velji Lago bay, on the west coast of Lastovo Island in Croatia. The settlement is tiny, and the harbour is a working quay shared by ferries from Split and Dubrovnik, commercial vessels, and local fishing boats. Yachts use the quay only for clearing in or out at the adjacent customs and immigration building; the ferry remains alongside overnight and is noisy, so staying the night is not advisable.
Depths alongside the quay are 4.0 to 5.0 metres, and the harbour offers space for roughly 10 to 15 yachts in depths of 3 to 6 metres. Water and electricity are available at the quay. Shelter in Velji Lago is good in most conditions, but strong southwest winds bring an uncomfortable swell; in those conditions, move to the sheltered anchorage at Jurjeva luka cove at the northwest end of the bay. The harbour is mostly occupied by fishing boats, and yachts are not allowed to linger longer than necessary for formalities.
The village has the harbourmaster's office, customs, a shop, a cafe, and a petrol station for yachtsmen. Out of season the petrol station is open mornings and afternoons; from June to September it is open all day. A mechanic is available by phone. Restaurants are in nearby bays rather than in Ubli itself. Lastovo Town, the island's main settlement with its distinctive fumari chimneys, is 8 km away by a hilly road, and buses run from Ubli to Lastovo Town.
The best season is June through September, when services are fully operational. The harbour is a temporary berth for customs formalities only, with no overnight stay permitted. After fuelling and clearing in, move to one of the nearby bays for the night. The Lastovo Nature Park surrounds the island, and the celebrated anchorage at Skrivena Luka (Hidden Harbour) lies on the south coast.
How to get there
Approach Ubli from the west side of Lastovo Island. From the south, use the deep channel between Lastovo and Mrcara island, but note a shoal patch extending some 200 metres off the headland at the south entrance to Velji Lago bay. Depths in the entrance and over most of the bay exceed 30 metres until close inshore, and careful chart work is needed among the islets and shoals.
The harbour is marked by a light on the breakwater head (Fl G 3s). Ubli is the most straightforward landfall on Lastovo. The quay is at the southeast corner of Velji Lago, northeast of the fuel berth.
