Full Description & Details
Boynuzbuku Koyu is a natural anchorage on the southern shore of Gocek Bay, about 18 km from Gocek town in Mugla province, Turkey. The bay opens to the west, with pine-covered headlands and coves on both the north and south sides. The water is somewhat turbid despite the attractive setting, and the bay is a popular stop on Gocek sailing routes.
The anchorage is sheltered from all winds except the east, though the Lodos (southwest wind) penetrates seriously into the bay. The seabed is firm mud with good holding. Depths range from 10 to 15 m just off the headlands to 20 to 30 m in the inner parts, with shallower water in the northwest cove. Boats can anchor and take shore lines to the red bollards on the shore, or lie at anchor. In southerly winds, the north side can be uncomfortable; the south side is more settled. The two southern indentations at the bay entrance are attractive for stern-to anchoring. A stream mouth on the south is shallow and reedy.
The Boynuz Buku Restaurant, a family-run operation at the head of the bay, has a wooden pier with 20 mooring buoys and a depth of 3 m at the pier. Electricity, water, showers, WC and hot water are available. The restaurant has its own vegetable gardens behind it and a water sports centre offering parasailing. There is no market in the bay; supplies must be carried in via the dirt road, the last 5 km of which is unpaved with no public transport. The bay connects by a 24 km road to Dalaman, and the operator can arrange airport taxi transfers.
The bay is busy in summer and anchoring spots can be hard to find. In winter, the end of the T-pier is removed and the facility is closed. The water is somewhat turbid. Overnight anchoring is permitted. The nearest town, Gocek, is about 18 km away and offers accommodation options, but the bay itself has no lodging facilities.
How to get there
Approach Boynuzbuku Koyu from Gocek Bay, heading toward the southern shore. The bay opens to the west, so enter from that direction. The restaurant pier is at the head of the bay, and the anchorage is marked by the pine-covered headlands on either side. Watch for the shallow, reedy area at the stream mouth on the south side of the bay. The restaurant can be contacted by phone at 0542 634 09 75.
Land access is via a dirt road, the last 5 km unpaved, with no public transport. Gocek is about 18 km away by road, roughly 20 to 25 minutes by car. Dalaman is about 24 km away by road, and the restaurant operator can arrange airport taxi transfers. There is no formal port entry procedure for this anchorage.
