Full Description & Details

Sutomore is a coastal town on Montenegro's Adriatic shore, sitting at the bottom of a wide bay roughly 3 NM northwest of Bar. The bay is backed by a long sandy beach, around 2 km of sheltered arc, with working fishing harbour activity and coastal hills rising behind it. Known as a summer resort, Sutomore draws families and backpackers to its beach promenade, seafood tavernas and beachfront bars, while remaining more affordable and less crowded than the Budva Riviera beaches to the north.

The anchorage at Sutomore is open to the south and southwest, so it offers limited protection from those directions. The bay is bordered by a sandy beach and the village sits at the head of the bay. Good holding can be found in about 5 m of water for a lunchtime stop. There is a working fishing harbour in the town, and the bay is distinguished by red cliffs south of the village. Overnight policy at the anchorage is not documented, so skippers should plan accordingly.

Facilities in Sutomore are oriented toward the summer tourist trade. The seafront promenade has seafood restaurants, cafes and bars, and family-run konobas in the old town alleys serve authentic Montenegrin dishes. The green market near the Bar bus station, a few kilometres away, sells local produce including olive oil, dried figs and cheese. Accommodation includes basic apartments and a few hotels, and the town has bus and train connections to Bar.

The best season is June to September, when the weather is hot and sunny and the waterfront is lively. Winters are mild and quieter, with some rain and many tourist facilities closed. The anchorage is exposed to southerly winds, so check the forecast before committing. Nearby attractions include the Stari Bar ruins, Lake Skadar National Park and coastal hill viewpoints above the harbour.

How to get there

Approaching Sutomore from the sea, the bay lies about 3 NM northwest of Bar. The wide bay is bordered by a sandy beach, and the village is at the bottom of the bay. Red cliffs south of the village mark the approach. Anchor in about 5 m of water for a daytime stop, and be aware the bay is open to the south and southwest. There is no documented VHF channel or harbour office for the anchorage.

The town has frequent bus and train connections to Bar, which is about 12 km south. Bar is the regional transport hub, with ferry links to Bari in Italy and the Bar to Belgrade rail line. For provisions, the green market near Bar bus station is the closest documented source of local produce.
