Full Description & Details
Velika Stupica is the westernmost and widest of three inlets at the southern end of Zirje Island, located 11 miles west-southwest of Sibenik. The bay is a busy and popular anchorage for visiting yachts, with the remains of a 6th-century Byzantine castle on the hill above. The setting offers a combination of natural beauty and historical interest, with the island's small population of 94 surviving largely on agriculture and fishing.
The anchorage provides mooring buoys in depths of 8.0 to 10.0 metres, which can be picked up for a fee. Alternatively, yachts can anchor in suitable depths and take a line ashore where possible. The holding is described as only moderate and poor in places, particularly in sand and weed. Shelter is excellent in all conditions except strong southeast winds, when the bay becomes less comfortable. Navigators should be aware of shoal patches off the headland at the eastern end of the inlet and between the small islet of Skrovada just west of the entrance and Zirje itself.
A family-run restaurant operates ashore, offering very good food according to recent visitors. The restaurant owner, Mate Sizgoric, also serves as the concessionaire for the anchorage. A water taxi service operates during the season. The distance between buoys in some places is narrow, requiring care during storms or when manoeuvring in crowded conditions.
Mooring fees are charged based on vessel length, with overnight rates reported at €40 per night for typical cruising yachts. The concession boundaries were modified and expanded in 2022, increasing the buoyed area. Contact for berth availability can be made by phone or email to the concessionaire.

Velika Stupica lies at the southern end of Zirje Island at approximately 43°38.1′N, 15°41.25′E. When approaching, be alert for shoal patches off the headland at the eastern end of the inlet. There are also shoals between the small islet of Skrovada, located just west of the entrance, and Zirje Island itself. The inlet is the westernmost of three at the southern tip of the island and is easily identified by its width compared to the neighbouring bays.
Sibenik is the nearest all-year port of entry, located approximately 11 miles to the east-northeast. During summer months, Sali on Dugi Otok and Primosten on the mainland also serve as ports of entry. The anchorage is accessible by water taxi during the season.
Sailors should contact the concessionaire on VHF or by phone (+385 98 9611500) for information on available mooring buoys before entering the bay.
