Full Description & Details

New Harbour Plakias is a modern marina on the south coast of Crete, about 1 km west of the tourist village of Plakias in the municipality of Agios Vasileios. The harbour was built to replace the old Plakias pier, and local fishing boats moved here when it opened. It sits at the edge of a bay that is open to the east and south, with the Libyan Sea to the south and the mountains of Crete rising behind it.

The marina has 78 berths for fishing and tourist boats, with stern-to and bow-to moorings. Water and power are available at the berths, and there is a boat launch ramp near the pier, though the ramp can be awkward to use because tavernas spread into the street around it. The harbour provides shelter from SW winds, but it is open to the east and south, so protection is limited in those directions. Anchoring in the bay is only advisable in calm weather, as the area is known for sudden and violent winds.

Plakias village, about 1 km away, has mini markets that cover most provisioning needs. Fuel is available about 2 km outside the village. There are tavernas near the pier, and the village has hotels and some tourist infrastructure. There are no port authorities, medical facilities, or repair services at the harbour itself. Taxis and a daily bus to Rethymno are available in Plakias.

Overnight stays are permitted. The harbour is a working fishing port as well as a visitor marina, so expect fishing boat activity, especially in the early morning. Given the exposure to the east and south and the risk of sudden violent winds, check the forecast carefully before committing to a berth or anchoring in the bay. The best conditions are generally with SW winds, when the harbour offers its best shelter.

How to get there

New Harbour Plakias lies about 1 km west of Plakias village on the south coast of Crete. The harbour is open to the east and south, so approach from those directions is straightforward in settled weather. There is no published channel or marked waypoint; use the harbour entrance directly, keeping in mind the exposure to the open sea.

The marina is not a port of entry, and there are no port authorities on site. From the harbour, the village of Plakias is about 1 km to the east, reachable by road or on foot. The nearest town of any size is Rethymno, about 36 km to the north, with a daily bus service and taxis available.

The coastal road from Plakias passes the harbour, and the mountain village of Sellia lies inland to the north. Formalities are minimal, as this is a small marina without customs or port authority facilities.
