Full Description & Details

The Marina of Chora Sfakion is a small harbour on the remote southwest coast of Crete, in the village of Hora Sfakion. It is one of two small harbours in the village, used mainly for ferry traffic rather than as a proper marina. The quay-side strip keeps the town's simple harbour character, with tavernas and a small west-side beach close by. The 1941 evacuation monument is the main historic point, and the village is the gateway for ferries to Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Gavdos. Imbros Gorge starts nearby, making this a busy stop for walkers and day-trippers.

The harbour itself is too shallow for yachts, and the entrance depth is about 5 metres. Most of the quays are complete, and a crane has been installed. A dive centre has been established in the harbour, and local boats have moved in. Overnight berthing is restricted, and the harbour is not suitable for yachts. In settled weather, it is best to anchor off in the bay to the northwest of the town, where holding is adequate for a stopover.

Facilities are limited. There are no water, electricity, toilets, showers, fuel, or chandlery services. Provisions are available in the village, and there are restaurants and tavernas along the waterfront. Garbage bins are provided. The harbour is exposed along this south coast of Crete, so it is not a safe haven in strong winds or heavy seas.

The best season is in settled weather, typically May, June, September, and October, when the meltemi winds are less frequent. In July and August, the meltemi can blow F5 to F6 or more, and the south coast can have ferocious gusts. The harbour is not a port of entry, and there are no formalities beyond normal Greek cruising requirements. Anchoring off is the only option for yachts, and it is only recommended in settled conditions.

How to get there

Approach Chora Sfakion from the south, passing the prominent rocks 'Tris Voulakous' about 150 metres west of the town. The harbour entrance has depths of about 5 metres, but the basin is too shallow for yachts. In settled weather, anchor off in the bay to the northwest of the town, clear of the ferry quay.

There is no VHF channel listed for the marina. The village is accessible by road from Chania, and there are buses to Chania. Ferries run from the harbour to Agia Roumeli, Loutro, and Gavdos. The nearest airport is at Chania, about 70 kilometres away. Formalities are not required for a stopover, as this is not a port of entry.
