Full Description & Details

Kastro Small Marina is the small yacht harbour in Chora, the capital of Andros, on the island's east coast in the South Aegean. The harbour sits at the foot of the town's cobblestone streets, which are lined with shops, tavernas and restaurants. It is a busy and lively spot during the summer, when tourists and locals visit the museums and the sandy coves of Neimporio and Paraporti nearby. The bay was enlarged in recent years to make room for more yachts, and it remains one of the newer ports on Andros, still being developed.

Depths in the anchorage range from 3 to 6 metres. Yachts can anchor on the north side off the end of the mole, going bow-to or stern-to. The bottom is sand and rocks and provides good holding. Overnight stays are permitted. The harbour is not protected from the Meltemi, and a dangerous reef lies directly at the approach, so caution is required when entering. When the Meltemi blows, a strong swell can build in the bay and make it uncomfortable.

Facilities are basic but adequate. Water is available at the quay, though electricity and water were not installed until after 2014. A supermarket is not far from the marina, and mini-markets and shops are nearby. Numerous tavernas and restaurants are within walking distance in Chora. The marina is used by small deck boats and sailing yachts.

The approach faces directly into the Meltemi and can be challenging. The reef running out from the headland can be identified by waves crashing onto it. Nighttime approaches are not recommended for first-time visitors. The harbour is exposed to the Meltemi, so it is best visited in settled conditions or outside the main summer wind season.

How to get there

The approach into Kastro Small Marina can be challenging because the harbour faces directly into the Meltemi. Care should be taken for the reef running out from the headland, which can be identified by the waves crashing onto it. Nighttime approaches are not recommended for first-time visitors due to the challenging entrance.

Once inside the bay, yachts can anchor in 3 to 6 metres on the north side off the end of the mole. Kastro Small Marina is in Chora, the capital of Andros, on the east coast of the island. From the harbour, the town is easily explored on foot.

Frequent buses run from Chora to other villages on Andros. The nearest ferry port is Gavrio on the west side of the island, which is the main entry point for visitors arriving by sea.
