Full Description & Details
Gialos is a small harbour on the island of Sifnos in the Cyclades, Greece. It is also known as Platys Gialos or Platis Gyalos. The harbour sits at the head of a bay with one of the largest sandy beaches on Sifnos.
The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag. The harbour area has a few berths, and the inner mole offers the best shelter, considered safe even in a strong Meltemi. The seabed is sand, but anchoring is forbidden, so you must use the laid mooring lines or go alongside.
Depths range from 1.5 to 4.2 metres, though some visitors report 5 to 7 metres. The harbour is protected from north winds all year, but the pier is exposed to southeast winds. Anchor holding is moderate to poor if you need to use your anchor as a backup.
How to get there
Gialos is on the south coast of Sifnos. The harbour is at approximately 36° 43.57' N, 25° 16.17' E. Approach with caution due to underwater rocks and shallow areas. If you find a free berth, go alongside the inner mole; this is the best and safest spot.
If occupied, go stern-to the jetty. The laid mooring lines are for smaller boats, so it is advisable to use your anchor as well, taking the mooring line additionally. There is no specific VHF channel mentioned in the sources.
