Full Description & Details
Alexandroupolis Marina is the inner harbor of the larger commercial port of Alexandroupolis, on the Aegean coast of northeastern Greece in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. The marina sits within the city, near the esplanade and its lighthouse, and is a practical stopover for yachts heading to or from the Evros River delta and the Greek-Turkish border. The outer port handles commercial traffic, so the inner harbor is the place to berth.
The inner harbor has permanent moorings with depths of 2 to 4 meters, and you can moor either stern-to or bow-to. The marina is described as very secure. Most berths are occupied by local yachts, so the usual practice is to ask about a temporarily vacated spot. If no room is available, the Coast Guard (Limenarchio) can direct you to a spot along the tall quay in the outer harbor, though that location is exposed to swell from ship wakes and wind fetch.
Water and electricity are available in the marina but are locked; you need to ask another yachtsman for the key. Fuel delivery can be arranged through the Coast Guard on VHF channel 12. There are many supermarkets nearby for provisioning, and several restaurants in the area, including Nisiotiko, Thema Coffees and Drinks Culture, Tavern of Agios Georgios, Hovoli, and Alma Tapas bar. Chandlery is limited to fishing supplies, and repairs are limited.
Contact the Coast Guard on VHF channel 12 before entering, especially if this is your first port in Greece, as Alexandroupolis is a port of entry. Be aware of heavy traffic into and out of the large commercial port. The marina is open year-round, and overnight stays are permitted. Note that there can be large numbers of flies and mosquitoes. The small harbor of Makri, a few miles west, is an alternative anchorage but develops a pronounced swell.
How to get there
The approaches to Alexandroupolis are straightforward, but be aware of heavy traffic into and out of the large commercial port. Contact the Limenarchio (Coast Guard) on VHF channel 12 before entering the harbor, especially if this is your first port in Greece, as Alexandroupolis is a port of entry. The marina is the inner harbor, converted from the commercial port; head there rather than the outer port.
The marina is located within the city of Alexandroupolis, near the esplanade. For land access, the city center is close by, with hotels and restaurants within walking distance. Car rentals are available, with delivery and pickup at the harbor arranged through Prima (+30 5510 45 409).
The nearest airport is in Alexandroupolis, and all car rental agencies seem to be based there.
