History of Port Hercule

This is one of the few, and perhaps even the only deep-water port on the French Riviera.
In ancient times, it was used by the Romans and Greeks as a trading port, but was poorly protected from the east winds. At the beginning of the twentieth century, two piers were built, providing more reliable protection.
In the 1970s, studies were carried out and the construction of a new dam and lee breakwater began, designed to provide complete protection of the port from waves in the eastern sector.
As a result, a unique floating structure 352 meters long and weighing 160,000 tons was built at the foot of the Rock of Gibraltar, which was towed to the Principality and moored at the foot of the rock, supplemented by a 145-meter breakwater on the lee side.
After the installation of a new dam, the port of Hercule can receive large cruise ships (up to 300 meters long), an additional berth has appeared to accommodate up to twenty yachts from 35 to 60 meters and two of 100 meters (for all vessels over 30 meters in length, port pilots are required).
